Understanding Liferay's Commercial Open Source Model

Open source software is now a thriving part of the enterprise IT landscape, but some confusion remains: who is responsible for supporting the software? How can vendors ask people to pay for open source? Isn't it good enough to find a services company to support my open source? In this talk, Joseph will go over Liferay's philosophy on open source and why we believe commercial open source is the best of both worlds: innovative, agile software development with long-term enterprise-grade support. Joseph will also cover strategies for how to properly manage the lifecycle of your open source-based enterprise software solutions and how to sell commercial open source to decision makers.

Supplier Extranet for Comprehensive Supply Chain Integration

This customer case study features an extranet portal built on Liferay, which provides the suppliers of the industrial customer the whole electronic communications process from quotation to invoice. As it is fully integrated to the ERP system of the ordering customer, it means goodbye to all paperwork, faxes, and manual typing for both ends of the supply chain. This is a good example of rapid business application development on a standard portal platform (Liferay) taking advantage of an application framework (Vaadin) and modern integration technologies (XML and Web services).

Developing Liferay Plugins with Maven

Maven is a popular build manager among Java developers that can be used to manage Liferay Plugins. Mika will give an overview of how to get Maven working with your Liferay environment.


Liferay 6.1: More Sophisticated Website Management

Liferay 6.1 includes new features and improvements that allows users to build and manage websites more easily. The most significant of these is multi-user branching, which allows multiple editors to edit their own version of a site simultaneously. Juan will show off this new feature in-depth and also introduce other features, including hierarchical site templates, advanced staging features, related assets, and page templates. 

Developing Innovillage Collaboration Portal

The main purpose of Innovillage is to bring people in the social and welfare field together, enable them to see what others are doing and to contact and collaborate with others working on similar projects and events. For Ambientia, Innovillage was a project where we implemented things "the Liferay way". The goal was to make sharing content between our portlet applications and the portal easier. We learned, for example, how to integrate our content to the portal search index and how to construct snippets of our content for viewing with Asset Publisher. We used many of Liferay's platform features, from the UI and programmatically, to make this possible.

Liferay Social Office 2.0: Product & Architectural Tour

Liferay Portal is a great platform for building applications, but sometimes the Liferay community needs something that's ready-to-go out of the box. That is the purpose behind Social Office, Liferay's readymade solution for team-based social collaboration. Now with version 2.0, Social Office can be deployed to an existing Liferay 6.1, instance, immediately enhancing the user experience. Get an overview of Social Office's new features, including the new Personal Dashboard, Contacts Center, Private Messaging, Micro-blogging, and Notifications. Joseph Shum will also provide details on how Social Office takes advantage of the plug-in architecture and 6.1's new ability to localize hook modifications to specific Sites.

Ruud Kluivers joins Liferay from a background in a large enterprise with mixed software environments. Ruud will share his experiences on promoting the adoption of Liferay and open source in a more traditional business environment and some of the ways Liferay was able to uniquely solve business problems for his company. Ruud will also talk about the pros and cons of Liferay vs. other industry-leading software such as Sharepoint, and how to make the various packages work together to deliver the most value.  

Avanza Bank Uses Liferay as a Social Platform for Business Innovation

When Avanza Bank back in 2009 started the work of building tomorrow's Online Bank, they decided to involve their customers in a way never before seen in the strict world of banking. In this session Joakim de Leeuw and Erik Andersson will explore the ideas behind Avanza Labs, and discuss how Liferay helped Avanza Bank building one of the first-ever crowdsourced banking sites.

Liferay 6.1: Lists, Forms & Workflow—New Tools for Power Users

Liferay 6.1 introduces new tools for power users designed to help them work more efficiently by modeling business processes in Liferay. Vacation requests, inventory lists, events organization, and editorial approvals can all be made more efficient with these new features. Join Olaf for a review on how to make the most of these tools.

Intranet and Course Booking System for Friskis&Svettis

IT is an integral part of any modern organization. To that end, six years ago Friskis&Svettis Riks, the umbrella organization administering education for the Friskis&Svettis member associations, needed to modernize its IT services. Integrations between different services and the development of a new course booking system led to a new portal for member associations and volunteers. In this case study the different challenges and choices leading up to the decision of solution are presented and why Liferay was selected.

Liferay 6.1: Liferay's New Document Management Strategy

Most enterprises have a heterogenous environment when it comes to document management, with Sharepoint, Documentum, and FileNet co-existing with new alternatives from open source providers. Liferay's new approach to document management in 6.1 gives users flexibility: continue to use each repository's interfaces for document editing and workflow and use Liferay for presentation and aggregation, or use Liferay as a single interface for adding, editing, managing, and publishing document-based content. Ruud will also go over new features such as Document Types and the new user experience.
