Employers Direct Insurance Company Creates
Higher Customer Satisfaction, Lower Costs with Liferay Portal
Open Source Solution Drives Multiple Websites and Simplifies Content Management
Duties for California's Workers' Compensation Specialist

AGOURA HILLS, CA – (November 1, 2006) – Liferay, a leading provider of enterprise-class open source software products, today announced that its Liferay Portal 4.1.1 technology is powering the corporate website for Employers Direct Insurance Company, California's only specialty direct writer of workers' compensation insurance. The site leverages Liferay Portal's Web publishing, document management, authentication and user management capabilities to directly impact customer experience, lower insurance premiums, and improve Employers Direct's bottom line.

Employers Direct eliminates costs from its sales channel by selling insurance directly to California business and industry with no independent agent or broker. This streamlined business model, in conjunction with customized loss control tools and training and fraud prevention techniques, helps lower the cost of workers' comp insurance for its policyholder customers.

Because cost and efficiency are critical to its business, Employers Direct chose to leverage the Internet to create value for its customers and to lower its administrative overhead. The company invites prospects to use the Web to determine if they qualify. In order to benefit from such an IT investment without disrupting its business model, however, Employers Direct recognized that the new site would have to be robust, easy-to-maintain, and developed with minimal cost.

Employers Direct found exactly what its solution in Liferay. Liferay's open source license allowed Employers Direct to enjoy an immediate return on investment, faster development cycles, and the freedom to customize the product. An elegant, easy-to-use interface and powerful feature set ensured that maintenance costs would not eclipse the savings gained from the no-cost license.

According to Greg Schueman, Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Employers Direct, Liferay Portal was the clear choice for its new technology platform. "We currently have 75 pages, 160 articles, and four custom portlets on our core website, EmployersDirect.com. In the past, this would have required huge amounts of work from programmers to establish and maintain. Liferay gave us almost all of the functionality we needed out of the box. Its web publishing system is simple enough that non-programmers can handle most of the work, which allows us to achieve our goal of having original content creators do as much ongoing content maintenance as possible."

Employers Direct was so pleased with the new platform that its customer-focused Internet-based services are just the beginning. The insurance provider is currently enhancing its Policyholder Extranet with a more extensive version of its information center, PCIC (Policyholder Claims and Information Center), that will allow companies to interact with Employers Direct and to view policy and claims-related information online. In addition, they will also be able to report a claim and connect to medical provider network (MPN) resources. The password-protected Extranet will leverage Liferay's authentication and user management features to minimize routine phone calls between claims examiners and policyholders to simplify the entire claims reporting process.

"Liferay was extensively involved in the creation of the initial portal infrastructure and will continue to work closely with Employers Direct to build further functionality to address its business needs," said Heather Swaim, Director of Operations for Liferay. "As Employers Direct's web presence grows, the company will be able to offer many online services to enhance customer satisfaction while driving unnecessary administrative costs from the system."

"Liferay Portal has become deeply embedded in our business," stated Schueman. "Employers Direct made a strategic choice to bring much of its customer service and interaction on the Internet, which made Liferay Portal a critical element for us. We feel that we have made the right choice due to Liferay Portal's ease of use and its ability to support virtually any feature or technology that we wish to deploy."

Liferay Teams With Pramati To

Multiply Product Capability and Value

Integrated App Server and Portal Smoothes Path to SOA

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Liferay, provider of the leading enterprise-class open source portal platform, and Pramati Technologies, a leading vendor of J2EE application servers and solutions, today announced a non-exclusive partnership to help customers leverage the benefits of Liferay's SOA-enabled enterprise portal framework. Under the agreement, Liferay Portal and Pramati Server will become available in a bundled version as a download on both companies' Web sites and ship with a 30-day developer license.

"Bundling Liferay Portal with Pramati's robust application server software allows our customers to multiply the value and capability of their IT initiatives by leveraging Liferay's excellent user management, CMS, authentication and presentation layer capabilities," said Jay Pullur, Founder and CEO, Pramati Technologies.

"This package is timely indeed as the coming version 4.2 of Liferay Portal provides standard integration with ServiceMix ESB and the jBPM workflow engine," said Brian Chan, founder and chief software architect of Liferay. "These technologies allow enterprises to quickly plug in applications such as business intelligence, enterprise content management, CRM, and eCommerce on top of Pramati, which is designed to deliver complex integrated applications with high availability and scalability."

Pramati expects the bundle to help its customers effortlessly build SOA capabilities into their IT infrastructure. Liferay Portal will also provide a unified user experience and a framework for extending that experience to all parts of the enterprise. The effortless nature of the bundle will allow companies to focus on developing core application functionality specific to the business.

Liferay in turn through this relationship will leverage customer-driven innovation, demonstrate the viability of mixed proprietary and open source environments, and deliver on its promise to remain vendor-neutral with support for all major application servers.

"There is no reason why an enterprise should spend precious technical and financial resources on the details of integrating Pramati with Liferay, ESB and workflow, or on building the services provided by our portal framework," Chan said. "We want our customers to focus their efforts on building functionality that will enhance and sustain the core competitive advantages of their business."

Pullur said, "Analysts predict 80% of IT spending will be on SOA initiatives within two years. This only makes sense because the benefit of a well-executed SOA, an IT infrastructure that can respond quickly to rapidly changing business realities, is enormous. The Pramati / Liferay bundle will not only ensure that our customers won't be stalled in implementing an SOA; it will give them a significant lead on competitors with extremely low costs of ownership."

According to Gartner, the portal market is experiencing a resurgence: "The past five years has witnessed a massive transformation of the market for horizontal portals. "We've built the Liferay platform to make it easy to engage users with personalized, consistent experiences on the devices of their choosing.

Companies can create consistent and integrated experiences across web and mobile channels

LOS ANGELES – (May 26, 2015) – Liferay, Inc., which makes enterprise open source portal software, today announced the availability of Liferay Screens to help companies develop native apps for the iOS and Android platforms. With Liferay Screens, organizations can easily extend the reach of their websites, portals, and intranets to mobile devices, and maintain a consistent experience for its users across all channels.

The release is part of Liferay's larger push to provide a mobile platform for companies developing several native apps across business units. With this strategy, Liferay hopes to save companies time and money by making it easier for mobile apps to reuse core data and services. The platform also ensures that users encounter consistent data and processes—such as registration, login, activity history, or documents—regardless of which interfaces they use to interact with the company.

"The problem we're trying to solve for companies is, ‘how do we quickly build great mobile apps that integrate with the overall customer experience, while keeping development costs to a minimum?'" said Juan Fernandez, Product Manager at Liferay. "Companies have to respond to the mobile explosion, but they need to do so with a strategy. With Liferay Screens, you can develop high-quality, elegant mobile apps quickly without compromising on these long-term considerations."

Liferay Screens also helps make native apps more useful to business units by removing the requirement for apps to be re-coded when business requirements change. For example, without Liferay Screens, a Customer Satisfaction Survey App would need to be updated and re-submitted to app stores whenever survey questions were updated. With a Liferay Screens-powered app backed by Liferay Portal, business users could update the questions in the portal, which would dynamically update the questions in the mobile app. The form submission could even be configured to trigger a workflow, which can also be updated by business users.

For mobile app developers and systems integrators, Liferay Screens provides several benefits over standalone or third party app development toolkits:

  • Fully compatible with standard development tools for iOS and Android
  • Lowers learning curve for developing apps backed by reusable backend services
  • Helps developers comply with UX and Brand requirements using Screens Themes, which follow Apple and Google's design languages and allow for custom colors
  • Adaptive layouts automatically ensure apps function and appear correctly on phones and tablets of any form factor
  • Reusable services like registration, user management, localization, and authentication help developers focus on more important business logic

Early beta testers of Liferay Screens have been enthusiastic about its benefits for mobile developers who need better mobile app development tools.

"I think the key differentiator of Liferay Screens compared to other mobile solutions in the market is the focus on native," said Nazaret Helices Perez, mobile developer at Near Technologies. "Working with native technologies is a must when you want to deliver high quality, high performance apps. Liferay Screens greatly facilitated this for our Liferay projects."

Salvador Tejero, mobile developer at Indra, added: "Liferay Screens is a breakthrough for the Liferay platform. After initial tests with Liferay Screens, we believe we will now be able to quickly create new screens in our mobile apps, easily feeding in content and services. This will add value to the end user and increase their loyalty... I'd highly recommend Liferay Screens to native app developers looking for a powerful and reusable backend."
