In Liferay 7, config is not tied to a single object. As long as you have the necessary accessor keys, you can get the configuration.
For example, a company-scoped config object only needs the company ID and you can get there. Same w/ the site (group) scoped config.
When you get to portlet instance config, well that's tough to get because you may be missing the portlet id (especially if it is instanceable).
