Liferay 7 Search Portlet Complex Query

Is there away to enter a complex query string into the input field of the of the Search portlet.

I mean can I do something like (tissue OR organ) AND disease which I tried but got a lot ands and ors in my result.

Also tried (tissue || organ) && disease but the operators seemed to be ignored.

I thought I could do this in 6.2 but it was going directly against lucene not elasticsearch. Yes I know elasticsearch has lucene under the covers.

I'd also like to be able to do proximity searches and boosting as well.
