I deleted a user, user is not in the table, but can't recreate user

I deleted a user awhile back (might have done it at the database level), but now I can't create a user with the same username. The user doesn't exist anymore, not in Liferay and not in the Users_ table in the Liferay database. Why is Liferay telling me there is still an account with the same screenname and how can I fix this?

Edit: This post has the solution to my problem:

There was a record in Group_ with a matching friendlyURL.

If you did it through the database, that's your problem. Go back into the database and recreate them there. At that point, you can go into the control panel and delete them from the control panel - note - you must deactivate them before you can delete them. Once deleted, you should be able to recreate them normally.
