What I've been seeing in the forums is that there is about a 10K limit due to some indexing issues in Jackrabbit. That's not a Liferay limit per se but a limit of most anything using Jackrabbit as an underpinning. There may be other limits as well based on what database backend you choose to use. MySQL, for example, doesn't support really large files.
