Successful auto login - you have entered invalid data error.

Greetings,
We have implemented a custom auto login class which seems to work properly -- we are able to authenticate successfully as expected, navigate around the portal, etc. However, upon logging in the error message "You have entered invalid data. Please try again" appears in the login portlet.
Again, authentication is successful and the message appears only once -- going back to the home page, for example, the message won't be there.
Authenticating using the default Liferay LDAPAuth does not produce the error message.
Any ideas what may be causing this? Or how we can most effectively troubleshoot the problem?
