Books on Liferay
Folks - I'm in charge of implementing a Portal using Liferay 5, and would like some recommendations for Books to buy: I'm purely interested in maintaining the Portal at the moment, but I would like to develop a custom theme for our portal eventually.
So far I've identified these 2 books:
http://www.apress.com/book/view/9781430218470 (which looks great but hasn't been published yet!)
http://www.packtpub.com/building-liferay-portal-enterprise-intranets/book
A couple of questions:
1. I wonder if anybody can tell me whether Jonas Yuan's book covers Liferay 5 at all, or is just Version 4? (I've seen conflicting comments about this on t'Internet)
2. Also, if Jonas' book just covers Liferay 4, should I NOT buy this one and wait for Poornachandra Sarang's book instead? Is it pointless to buy a book on version 4, when I'm using version 5?
Thanks for any advice!
Cheers

If your company can afford it, they should send you to a Liferay-Training. I have been there and it was a great way to dive into the devlopement process fast.
But before you decide to use a specific portal, make yourself familiar with the general portlet specs! It makes life much easier if you know the foundation. JSR 168 is covered in the Apress book "Building Portals with Java Portlet API". This is a good starting point. But because the version 2.0 of the portlet spec. just arrised and is available within Liferay, you should than make yourself familiar with the JSR 286, which covers e.g. resource serving (this could be used to implement AJAX easily and in a nice way).
There are some great articles about the new JSR 286 available at Sun. If you want to use JSF - especially IceFaces, you should check out their documentation/webcasts.
I do not recommend Jonas Yuan's book. It could be useful if you want to get a short description about a specific portlet - but it's not worth the money. I recommend to wait for the new book comming soon...

Dear Friends,
I have authored one of the most comprehensive guides on Liferay development titled as "Liferay Portlet Cookbook". This book has fourteen chapters starting from installation of Liferay to covering some of the advanced topics. Best of all, this book is absolutely free for everyone to download, learn and share. You can download a free copy of this book from http://www.mpowerglobal.com/download-cookbook. This book is an outcome of my experience working on Liferay since early 2006 onwards.
