Integrate workflow with document library

Has anyone tried to implement a workflow with document library? Once a document is uploaded, it should not be visible till its been approved. An email should be sent to the approver and once its approved, the document can be seen by everybody.

I am also looking for the add-Approve-Publish kind of workflow for Document Library as well as Web Content.

Currently I am using Liferay Portal 5.2.3 CE; As I understand from the discussion thread, that this feature is not readily available on 5.2.

Can any one suggest any workaround.

Can we use workflow portlet for the same.

Did you got this implemented, we have similar requirement - we need it for 5.2.3

Any inputs are much welcome. Our client is not willing to move to 6.0.x since its not stabilized yet.
