Add an Application

Introduction #

Liferay 5 provides a framework for applications which can be implemented by users according to their needs. The Add Application window pops up on by clicking the Add Application link from any page. It has a search-box which searches as you type, for applications in each collection. It expands all collections, listing the applications which includes the search string in their names. You can move the Add Application window around the page by pressing the right mouse button on it. You can either add an application or drag-and-drop an applications to a page.

Add an Application #

  1. Login to LIeray portal as a user.
  2. Click __Add Application__ link. The Add Application window pops up.
  3. Type a search string in the __Search content__ box. For example, type letter 'a'. All the applications which include the letter a in their names are listed.
  4. Click Add against the application you want to add to the page, or drag-and-drop the application. The application is added to the page.

__Caution - __ Exercise caution in removing an application from a page. If you click the remove button to remove an application from a page, the application disappears from the list of applications in the Add Application window. If you minimize an application instead.

Application Collections #

Admin, CMS, Collaboration, Community, Entertainment, Finance, News, Polls, Sample, Shopping, Tools, Undefined, User-Portlets, and Wiki are the collection frameworks of applications, with each of them containing a number of applications.

Admin Applications #

The Admin application collection provides the framework to implement the applications, such as Admin, Enterprise Admin, Organization Admin, Plugin Installer, Software Catalog, Tags Admin, Update Manager, Asset Publisher, Document Library, Software Catalog, and Tags Admin.

CMS Applications #

The CMS (Content Management System) application collection provides the framework to implement the applications, such as Asset Publisher, Document Library, Image Gallery, Navigation, Site Map, Tags Admin, and XSL Content.

Collaboration Applications #

The Collaboration application collection provides the framework to implement the applications, such as Blogs, Blogs Aggregator, Calendar, Chat, Mail, Message Boards, Recent Bloggers, SMS Text Messenger, and Wiki.

Community Applications #

The Community application collection provides the framework to implement the applications, such as Bookmarks, Invitation, Page Comments, Page Ratings, Communities, and Directory.

Entertainment Applications #

The Entertainment application collection provides the framework to implement the applications, such as Reverend Fun and Words.

Finance Applications #

The Finance application collection provides the framework to implement the applications, such as Currency Convertor, Loan Calculator, and Stocks.

News Applications #

The News application collection provides the framework to implement the applications, such as Alerts, Announcements, and Weather.

Polls Applications #

The Polls application collection provides the framework to implement the applications, such as Polls and Polls Display.

Sample Applications #

The Sample application collection provides the framework to implement the applications such as Hello Velocity, Hello World, IFrame, Reports (built from the EXT environment) and Web Proxy.

Shopping Applications #

The Shopping application collection provides the framework to implement the applications, such as Amazon Rankings.

Tools Applications #

The Tools application collection provides the framework to implement the applications, such as Analog Clock, Dictionary, Language, Password Generator, Search, and Translator.

Undefined Applications #

The Undefined application collection provides the framework to implement the applications, such as Activities, Address Book, and Instant Messenger.

User_Portlets Applications #

The User_Portlets application collection provides the framework to implement the applications, such as Suggest and Search Portlet.

Wiki Applications #

The Wiki application collection provides the framework to implement the applications, such as Wiki Display.

With the 5.1.1 bundle, only the following applications are available OOTB under "Sample":
Hello Velocity, Hello World, IFrame, Web Proxy

Additionally, User_Portlets are not available.
