Extending liferay session from external application

We open an external web application if the user clicks one of the liferay portal tab. We need to keep liferay session active while the user is working on that application. I tried calling http://host[:port]/portal/extend_session . However this doesn't seem to work
Tracking the headers I see that the JSESSIONID is proper ID but one difference I noticed calling between Liferay.extend.session and the complete url
http://host[:port]/portal/extend_session is that LFR_SESSION_STATE doesn't seem to be updated in the second case.
Did any one tried calling http://host[:port]/portal/extend_session and made it work ?

Cannot be done. Tabs cannot talk to each other and have no control over each other. This is a security feature to ensure bad actors cannot access data on other tabs.
