Limiting results number in asset publisher

I'm trying to use the asset publisher to render the last publisher article in a series. I want just that want so I thought it would be possible just by setting "Maximum Items to Display" to 1 in the portlet configuration.However, I can not make it display whatever I choose. What am I doing wrong?

I just found out that there is an issue open that covers this, sorry. It seems to be a bug:
