They're not really connected.
Friendly URL mappers are for portlets to simplify a page definition.
If you use the OOTB DDL portlets, well you cant (shouldn't) modify those. If you're embedding DDL stuff within your portlet, well then you just need to do the URL mapping for your portlet.
