Getting document library file content via SOAP

Hello!
We're working with Liferay from an external Java application utilizing SOAP (portal-client.jar) to access Liferay API. We need to work with files in the document library. It's not a problem for us to work with file lists and metadata, but there seems to be no API to get file content from Liferay via SOAP. Have any of you friends done such things? Is it really so? What API should we use for it then? Just retrieve files via HTTP using their UUID? In this case how should we provide credentials if the files are not available to guests?
Would appreciate any kind of help.
