Give users community membership through role

I would like to give all users with a particular role membership of a community. Can this be done? If I go to assign members to a community it only allows me to assign users, organisations and user groups. If I go to edit the permissions of the community there is no "member" permission that I can give to the role. I think I might be missing something here.

hi Ben Starr,

You want to assign all users of your portal to a certain Community role . Is that right ?

First enter your custom community role in Default User Association-->Role field.
Through this all users who are created from now will be assigned to this role. For existing users , you must manually assign it.

Then, goto Roles and click Assign members in Action button of your custom role, there you can see Community tab. Assign your community.
