Hi Tony,

there are lots of different sample portlets using different framworks and technologies. You can download them from the downloads section looking for sample in Community Plugins. (or you can also find them in the svn repository).

Maybe a little late, but for people searching for Liferay Crud applications, a solution can be XMLPortletFactory. It works with whichever database Liferay is installed, because internally it uses service builder.
