How to start with themes?

I try to create new theme by modifity classic theme.
In Eclipse i created new theme and in build.xml set

<property name="theme.parent" value="classic" />

But after deploy dont see classic theme. After i copy js, css and image folders from theme root to _diff folder but nothing heppens. Whats im doing wrong?
