You never modify liferay code. Period.

At the same time Liferay has supported entry points where functionality can be added or modified. But without any detail, no appropriate guidance can be given on how to proceed.

In light of that, the only thing I can tell you is not to modify anything because it will end up introducing instability into your portal.

That's the trap - something that might seem like it would be easy or something you feel you just need to do will end up impacting portal stability.
