Microblogging in Liferay

I'm evaluating Liferay for a future project, and there is one feature I have not been able to verify that exists. Can anyone tell me if Liferay support internal microblogging. I do not want to post messages to Twitter or similar services, but I want to be able to post short status messages for the rest of the Liferay powered network to see.

I've not tested it much but maybe the announcement portlet would do the job.
