Ntlm authentication is prompting for username and password

How is NTLM authentication supposed to work?

I have configured AD connection and NTLM authentication and it seems to work fine.

But the problem is that even though I am logged in to a computer in the domain with a domain user account, it is always prompting for username and password for IE8 and Firefox. Isn't it supposed to log me in without any prompt dialogs?
