Social not displaying messaging in 6.2

I have a fairly new 6.2 GA4 CE environment that I've installed the Social Networking CE from the Marketplace, and everything seems to work except I don't see the messaging functionality. When I go to a user's Dashboard that is configured (and seems to functional) for Social, the only items shown are the mini blog (i.e. "update your status"), announcements, activities, and tasks. Shouldn't the messaging portlet be displayed? Or, does it require additional configuration for messaging?
