Improvements in the translation process

Hi everyone,

we are working on improving the translation process in order to make it easier for everyone to collaborate. We are studying Milan's suggestion to use Pottle or even build our own portlet and we will keep you informed of the progress.

However, one of the first improvements has been the simplification of the current files management. As some of you have already noticed the language_**.native.properties files have disappeared. Why? Because Mike Young found a way to make our translations work without them reducing the complexity of our current process. There are more details in the ticket: LPS-11939 No longer need native2ascii step in build-lang.

so, how does affect the translation process? It is easier now. emoticon
From now on, translators only have to worry about the language_**.properties file (there are no native files anymore). In that file, you will still have the (Automatic Copy) or (Automatic Translation) flag and you can use utf-8 caracters in there. In order to contribute it, you just need to send the patch or your language_**.properties file.

Sorry for those who found this change and were surprised about it without any information, we will make sure to let everyone know with more anticipation for next changes.

Thanks everyone for your efforts and patiente!

The current version of Liferay (6.0.5) still contains some hardcoded strings as well as using values from a database.

Would appreciate if you'll think up translation processes from these items too.

Example:
http://issues.liferay.com/browse/LPS-12345

http://issues.liferay.com/browse/LPS-12194?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=106123#action_106123

Additionally, translation probably is too insufficient - I think the forum name should be changed to "Localization". There are local formats such as date and user names which also needs to be changed besides just translating messages. For example, Japanese names don't have "titles", "middle names", and "suffixes" and use family name - given name order. Translation is only concerned with translating the words, but there really is a need to localized pages to fit the customs of a society. Customs and translation is different, because Japanese companies may operate overseas may require English translation of their screens, but may use Japanese localized sreens layout with Japanese localized fields.

With Liferay entering the Global market, I think it's time to think more about "localization" rather than just "translation".

FYI, I'm making a localized Japanese copy of Liferay community edition which includes all fixes I've created in the issues.

I replied to another one of your posts and addressed the localisation vs translation issue. Right now, we don't have a fluid localisation process that includes translation. Translation is one aspect, and localisation is another, one that has some limitations at the moment.

Hopefully we will be able to soon have a more flexible localisation structure that will allow translators and localisers to have the power and flexibility to produce native-feeling distributions without modifying the portal. emoticon

I've already began localizing (not just translating) Liferay 6 for Japanese users. The current localized version is available from my site below and includes all patches I've created in the issues.

Nevertheless, I and most of us here really would like to see the distributable download available from Liferay.com and see the localized version of EE as well.

I understand what you've said about your efforts, and I am extremely grateful for your work. ^_^

Our goal is not simply to provide redistributables of different localised versions, but to empower our users, community and enterprises to be able to take Liferay out of the box, and see a customised, localised experience. If it doesn't exist, we should make it as easy and streamlined to produce as possible.

Once again thanks so much for your input, it really reaffirms a lot of what translators, localisers, etc need.
