The download page mentions a release every 8 months for Social Office.

I downloaded 1.5b in September 2009, which is a little over 10 months ago.

Is there a new release on the horizon yet?

Hi Andrew,

We decided to base the next release on Liferay 6, so we are looking for a new SO release in September. Thanks for being patient. How has SO been so far for you? Is it meeting your needs?

Hi Bryan,
do You have any news about the latest version?
(We are a small university team and fell in love with SO but we have too much trouble with the 1.5b... we already evaluated other options because of the lag but we would stick to SO. emoticon)
Thnx

Gergely,

Right now we have a QA build of 1.6 EE but this would require purchase. Do you have a budget for SO?

We are trying to also get a CE version out as well as a hosted version, but it's unfortunately taking some time.

Bryan,
thnx for the quick answer!
As a small hungarian university team we do not have a budget, but if we get a reasonable bid we would even consider to pay for it personally. Unfortunately we did not get an answer from sales@liferay.com to our request...

In the absence of a new version, could the development team at least release the portal source that was used to build Social Office 1.5b? Then at least some of the bugs that are present could be fixed by those of us in the community that are using the product.

You probably won't see the 1.5 source, as we're committing most of our SO resources to the 2.0 effort (See Bryan's comments on this thread). We have ironed out some of the "themes" of the 2.0 release (such as supporting in as a plugin on top of Liferay Portal, among others) but haven't yet set a release date.

Hi Mélanie,

The team is working on the next version but we don't yet have a release date.

There is a 1.6 EE available if you'd like to evaluate it.

I fail to see where social office can be used, why use a cut down version of Liferay..? Along the line you may need to adapt or expand and SO is very limited in my opinion. What benefits does social office carry over Liferay?

Thanks
William

Hi William,

Strictly speaking there are certain features in SO that don't exist in portal (Tasks and Contacts). However your general point could be valid depending on the audience.

While it's true that SO is less flexible (in the present version) than Portal, a lot of business users or end users appreciate that it's tailor-made for the specific scenario of team collaboration.

I'm not sure if you're coming from a more technical or business perspective, but SO's value is that it tries to anticipate user's needs and do a lot of work for you ahead of time.

But perhaps more convincing perspectives can come from the other community members. emoticon

Hello!

This thread started almost a year ago, but we still haven't seen a new Community release. Is that new release still in the plans or should I just go ahead and try to replicate SO with a full (and more flexible) Liferay portal?

Thanks!

Sorry for taking MONTHS to reply! I think the SO concept is brilliant. It saves an enormous amount of time fiddling about with configurations and allows me to deploy, add users and off we go.

I had to disable portlets that used external feeds (news & weather) because like many SO sites, we're behind firewalls and these portals made SO unusably slow (due to no/slow internet connection). However, the activity, document library and wiki components are very popular and very easy to use.

I have been vaguely tempted to go full Liferay, put with no pressing need, I've opted to wait....
