I guess this functionality is already developed. Check Documents and Media Downloader app on market place.

We can use “AnyClient” and “WebDev” to download documents and media from liferay portal, we can use this tools for upload too.

I second this and actively want this feature. Can't count the number of times it would have been useful to zip and download.
