Liferay won't install

Hi guys

I have a problem with Liferay installation. I'm trying to install bundle version of liferay and tomcat 5.5 (tried tomcat 6.0 bundle earlier) on a VPS server via ssh, but when I run ./startup.sh I get the following lines instantly coming up

Using CATALINA_BASE: /home/liferay-portal-5.2.3/tomcat-5.5.27
Using CATALINA_HOME: /home/liferay-portal-5.2.3/tomcat-5.5.27
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /home/liferay-portal-5.2.3/tomcat-5.5.27/temp
Using JRE_HOME: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun

Then an empty command line appears

/home/liferay-portal-5.2.3/tomcat-5.5.27/bin#

and that's it. Nothing happens. Is that how it should be? No confirmation that tomact started?
Also, ssh connection slows down and keeps running very very slow after the startup, even hours afters when I try to reconnect. Must reboot server to make it work fast again

I assume it starts and works in the background or something, but I can't see anything on localhost:8080 ( permanent loading state)

check the log files in /home/liferay-portal-5.2.3/tomcat-5.5.27/logs/catalina.out, that would help to find the solution.

I think it's a memory issue, how much memory do you have? Please copy and paste the output of this here:

ps fuaxw | grep tomcat (if it's a linux)

This would tell the memory settings for us.

I figured what's going on. The server starts up (around 110,000ms) and Liferay appears on localhost:8080 (which is actually not localhost but IP address as I access it via web) but it takes 2-3 minutes for each Liferay page to load

Any idea what's wrong with the speed?

How much memory does your VPS have? I think it's the problem as VPS servers usually don't have enough for a portal. And now it's swapping.

It's 512mb... too low?

I think, yes, but I'm not sure, if it's the cause of the slow speed.

You can check how much memory is used by the free command.

You can check if the swapping makes is slow by checking the output of the vmstat 2 command output while clicking on the installed Liferay.

Line where free mem drop to 6100 and then to 4448 is the moment when I refreshed Liferay page in the browser

Yes, it starts swapping, when you do it, so memory upgrade will improve the performance.
