Can facebook functionalities be emulated in Liferay?

Does facebook provide such APIs where in I can do simple operations like, alert when there is new post on the wall or friend request or somebody's birthday etc.?. And hence eventually, emulate certain features of facebook?

Hi,

you have full controll over the whole database and can access any information you like with the Liferay services.

You can use the Plugins SDK to develop a custom portlet that is displaying what you want.

so you don't want to emulate the facebook functionality in Liferay, you want to embed Facebook information in Liferay.

I think there is an API for that, but in your case, I would ask at the Facebook forums.

I just found that there are many Google gadgets for this purpose.. and since they all are JSR 168, they should work on Liferay.
Do let me know if my assumption is wrong.

To reach a logical conclusion to this discussion..
There is a portal called 'Google gadget' in Liferay which helps you port any of Google gadgets to Liferay.

I'm trying to develop a facebook portlet to be include in liferay.
Well, it has not been an easy work... but i'm trying yet.
