Sharepoint Vs. Liferay

My organization is looking to migrate from Sharepoint to Liferay. We've gotten an installation up and running (pretty easily!) and some user questions have come up.

Does Liferay have an analog to Sharepoint's lists? Our users enjoy the freedom and customization that Sharepoint offers here. For those unfamiliar with Sharepoint, it allows you to create a sort-of database -- you can customize columns and datatypes, extract metadata from documents, and provide different views for portlets or priviledged users. I've looked through the list of portlet applications, and nothing seems similar.

Also, we have accured a lot of data in sharepoint; many hundreds of gigs. Are there tools to plan/ ease migrations? I'd like to know that this isn't going to be a giant, manual process.

Thank you for any insight you have into these questions, I appreciate it!

I think instead of migrating data, would it be easier if you had
portlets in liferay which can get the data from sharepoint lists and
documents and show you in liferay portal as portlets . This way users
din't loose their data and din't loose their customizations done to
lists and document libraries and you can preserve sites created also emoticon.
Liferay will then act as a gateway for users and then you reap both the
benefits from both the sides.

You should definitely look into Social Office too, it's not available yet but will be soon. It's a pre configured liferay installation with already defined pages and modified portlets for easier use. And it's really mentioned as a sharepoint competitor.

Jesse, something similar to what you've described can be accomplished with expandos within journal articles, but not without some velocity coding, check Ray's blog entry.

Thank you all for the feedback and pointers, I appreciate it!

Some of this is a little puzzling to me though; if users want to create (and collaborate over) a list of data, what's an easy way to get there in liferay? Would the recommendation be to upload a spreadsheet and work from that?

Hi Jesse,

FYI, we are looking at implementing Sharepoint-style lists in the next version of Social Office. See here for the discussion:

Hi Bryan,

Any ideas when the next version of Social Office will be released?
