Dining in the Windy City

It’s never too early to plan your next meal–or your next, next, next meal for that matter. While it may seem like Liferay Symposium North America is a while away, it’ll be here before you know it. And when it does, you want to make sure you’re prepared to do one of the most important things a person can do while in Chicago. Eat.

What follows is a list of Chicago’s must-eats. You know, in case you don’t have time to go on a food tour or sift through hundreds of Yelp reviews...

First, what’s served on a poppy seed bun with yellow mustard, relish, chopped onions, tomato wedges, sport peppers, a pickle spear, and a dash of celery salt to top it all off? Hint: ketchup is strictly forbidden when it comes to this Chicagoan trademark.

1. The Chicago Dog

Conveniently located just one block away from the Hilton Chicago, Devil Dawgs offers a variety of Chicago-style dogs that you can enjoy for the same price as your morning latte. And if you don’t mind walking a little bit out into the city, Portillo’s has Italian Beef (another Chicago favorite) on their menu as well. But let’s say you’re looking for something that’ll satisfy your 2 a.m. late night food cravings–worry not! Jim’s is open 24/7. And as for their hot dogs, well, the raving reviews speak for themselves.

2. Deep Dish Pizza

It’d be a shame to leave Chicago without having eaten a real, Chicago-style, deep dish pizza pie. And while pizza joints abound in this city, here are a few fan favorites:

Lou Malnati’s is hailed as the go-to place to experience deep dish pizza, the Chicago way. But like every classic dish, fans usually take to different sides when it comes to finer details, such as flavor, texture, and in this case, sauce to crust ratio. Giordano’s offers a stuffed crust and has been a strong contender of Lou Malnati’s for a while now. Both are great, so you can’t go wrong with either choice.

3. Dessert

We all have it–that mysterious, extra stomach for dessert. Which is perfect, considering there are so many places in Chicago that’ll satisfy your sweet tooth. Do-Rite Doughnuts offers an eclectic selection of flavors that’ll leave you wanting to try all the different options. Fans consider these doughnuts to be “definitely worth the indulgence.” But if you’re a more adventurous eater, Black Dog Gelato is the place to visit. You’ll find some pretty interesting flavors: Rosemary Irish Cream, Mexican Hot Chocolate, and even Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel, just to name a few. Wonder what they all taste like? Why not stop by?
