LDAP configuration

Hello Every one,

I need information about LDAP, and the LDAP configuration i'm assuming that using LDAP we can get a copy of users information of other database.
is that makes any sense if not, guide me about configuring the LDAP

i'm working with windows XP operating system and i don't know the OS and other details like

database etc., how can i proceed
