Change css of theme downloaded

Hello to all,
I downloaded a theme for Liferay 6.2 GAE5 with all the structures and templates.
Now I just wanted to change a color of a section and I found the css where I have to make the changes but still changing it deployed within the theme does not change anything (always takes the original one) .1
How do I change a theme from the one downloaded from the internet without starting from scratch ???
I imported the downloaded theme in eclipse I changed the css file and put it in the "_diffs" folder, I deployed and breaks all the graphics.
