How to change the global liferay search portlet with our own custom portlet

I want to replace the Liferay Global search portlet with my own custom portlet where I have doing the search implementation in a different way.
Actually in our project we are using a theme which another team is working, and we have only the theme war file. Can we change the global search box using a hook

no, you'll have to get the theme team to embed your search portlet.
