Authenticating against Liferay

I'm wondering how do I implement authentication against Liferay user base from a external system, which uses Spring Security.

I'm not asking about CAS, OpenSSO or any other SSO solution. I want to keep Liferay's own authentication, and authenticate another application (not a portal) against Liferay.

Is this possible? Is there any authentication webservice? Is there any modification that allows Liferay to behave as an OpenID Provider?
