Custom Liferay Authenticator - Best Practice?

Hello!

I am referring to an already existing topic in the forums - Custom Authenticators


I have the exact same use case for which the solution is mentioned.
I need some advice from the experts as to what would be the right way to do this?
Is it safe to follow the method mentioned in here? Is it forward Compatible?

If not, is there some other way I can do this using a Hook?

Oh! I forgot to mention - we will be using the new Liferay 6.0 or upwards
