Configure Message board mails

Hi. I am working on localhost. I want to be able configure the message boards mails i.e. the users should receive mails about the categories and threads they are subscribed to. Since, i am new to liferay i donot know how to configure the mail server and message board mails. I am using Iiferay 6.0.6 bundled with tomcat.....Please help,,,,its urgent

Hi David, I have gone through the administartion guide and based on that, i did the following::
email address ::: my own gmail Id
INCOMING Protocol:: POP
Server Name :: localhost
Server Port :: 110
User name :: Same as used in portal-ext.properties file used to configure mail server
Password :: Same as used in portal-ext.properties file used to configure mail server
Read Interval :: 5 minutes
OUTGOING email address :: same gmail id as used above in first place
I am unable to get the desired results. I am working on a localhost.
Please help me.....i have a deadline to meet

Gmail has special settings that must be applied.

Fortunately if you google for "liferay gmail smtp" you get a number of hits that already will walk you through it.

Thanks for your help but I just messed it up. The mail settings done from GUI, override the portal-ext.properties file. Can you please tell me how to delete these settings so as to have the settings from portal-ext.properties file work.
