Newbie question-description of how authentication and user management

Hello!
I am new in Liferay community but I am exited to start working with Liferay!
I have some questions concerning user authentication and identity management. How are they accomplished exactly?? What is the repository? Are ACLs used? The user guide that exists isn' t very explanatory to me as far as the description of the process is concerned. Are there any more whitepapers?
