add search to existing portlet

Hi All-
I would like to add search to the announcements portlet but am having problems configuring it. I have my AnnouncementsIndexer and AnnouncementsOpenSearchImpl classes created and defined in portal-ext.properties and liferay-portlet.xml. If I search, I get an error: Error displaying content of type com.liferay.portlet.announcements.util.AnnouncementOpenSearchImpl: com.portal.kernel.search.SearchException: java.lang.NullPointerException.

I am deploying via EXT, which may be my problem. Any thoughts?
