The main goal of this project would be the creation of a portlet (or a set of portlets) that allows the users to use Liferay Portal as an environment were students can do exams.

This could be a single portlet separated in the following views:

  • The administration view: the administrator can add/edit an exam, which is composed by a set of questions, or access an already created exam to see the marks of the students that have already done it.
  • The student view: the student will see the exam's questions and when he's finished the exam, he'll see his mark.

This is an initial description. The complexity and amount of features will depend on the developer's capacity

This would be very a good step towards an LMS implementation. This would be a start in replacing Moodle or Sakai.

Enterprise Pathways has created a SCORM 1.2/2004 Compliant LMS as a series of portlets. Just now going to market as a beta release.

We have implement this under Project Learn ( http://www.liferay.com/community/projects/learn/overview ). It includes exam and question management. Also we will be releasing gradebook for it within a month. It is all open source.

It would be great though, to have this project developed further as a proposal for Google Summer of Code. Especially it would be great to focus on new features which are important LMS functions but are outside SCORM scope. We would be happy to participate and define the requirements more further.
