Chat portlet is explained in Liferay Administration Guide.

http://www.liferay.com/documentation/liferay-portal/6.0/administration/-/ai/ch-3

Deepak, before you post a question, can you search for it yourself. Appreciate if you'll read the forum guideline:

I've given you a url to the Liferay Guide. Chat portlet is pre-installed by default from the portal.properties file so it won't show up in the Add pull-down menu.
You can see the chat portlet at the bottom right of the page while viewing this forum. You'll should see "Settings" and "Online Friends( )" on the bottom right hand corner of this page.

This has also been answered many times in this forum, but before you ask,
Chat portlet is installed by the following setting in the portlet.properties file.

#
# Set the static portlets that will appear for every layout. See
# /html/portal/layout/view/portlet.jsp for the logic of when these portlets
# will be shown. For example, these portlets will only show for layouts that
# can contain portlets and are not in a pop up state.
#
layout.static.portlets.all=1_WAR_chatportlet

To disactive the chat portlet, just set this to as below in the portlet-ext.properties file.
layout.static.portlets.all=

Hi,

If Chat Portlet has been discussed extensively in forum then we have a Wiki Page of the same.

Wiki pages are community pages. So yes, you are welcomed to write and update wiki pages yourselves. You can even start up a Hindu wiki site instead of writing content in English.

It seems there is some communication problem. Why don't you start up a new forum in Hindu so you'll be able to support each other much better? There seems to be enough users from India. All you have to do is to request one.

Finally, I've said this a number of times, but if you're just interested in getting answers to your questions instead of participating, you're better off getting support from Liferay.

Oddly, some of the old topics on the chat portlet have been deleted since Liferay Forums migrated to this new format. I've searched my old posts to find the solution to this problem and my posts regarding this topic are all gone. This is a bit disconcerting that old answers are being deleted? (It could be a bug?)

I recall having to change the portlet.properties file in the chat-portlet package.

Try checking:

webapps\Chat-portlet\WEB-INF\classes and open portlet.properties:

1buddy.list.strategy=all
2#buddy.list.strategy=communities
3#buddy.list.strategy=friends
4#buddy.list.strategy=communities,friends

Comment out the first line and delete the pound sign on the strategy that you do want.

Hope this helps.

I'm sorry, the best practice is to actually just to add the line you want to "portlet-ext.properties" instead of directly editing the portlet.properties file.

That's funny, I'm not having too much problem finding similar posts on the topic:

If your requirement is to do chatting with a group of members..then you have to create a community and then add those members to that community.
And set buddy.list.strategy=community in properties file..

If you need more customizations then create a hook for the same.
