I have a specific requirement to write a specific application module as a portlet and deploy it in a JBoss server (not in a portlet container) and have it consumed in a Liferay portlet container (hosted in a different server). Can someone suggest if this is possible? If yes, could you give any pointers to this?

not possible. The jboss instance would not have any of the portal stuff on it, so it's not going to know anything about the portlet lifecycle, etc.

You can stand up a regular servlet-based app on the jboss instance and have the portlet in the liferay container 'consume' it (don't know if you're talking about doing a web service to consume or if you're talking about a page/pages app that would be shown in a portlet frame such as the iframe portlet).
