I had followed this guide by LifeRay to create tags
http://www.liferay.com/documentation/liferay-portal/6.1/user-guide/-/ai/lp-6-1-ugen03-using-the-asset-publisher-portlet-0

One issue I have encountered is that it is done using control panel.
Is there anyway for it to link it to a custom portlet with a textbox.

So If I type' A ' in the textbox , I would be able to see a auto complete of suggested tags with letter "A" which already exist.
I also wish to add new Tags from that textbox.

Anyone have any suggestions or could at least point me to the right direction or a referance code?

In your custom portlet you can add this tag
1<liferay-ui:asset-tags-selector>
and it will render the same tag selector as is present in the control panel.

Bart gave u the answer already.. u need to use this tag and set its attributes values properly.. wht i remember is that there are 2 main attributes we need to define to make this work.. classname and classpk something like that..

in your class you need get the selected tag ids and save it in assetentry tables using liferay assetentry API's.
