We use the "Asset Importer" portlet (which Juan Fernandez developed, see his blog post about it) - but I don't think its source code is currently available. It converts office-like documents (ODT, markdown, etc) into what you see on the docs page.

Thanks you all. I saw the blog entry that is dated 2010. I don't understand if finally was included in the 6.0 CE as told in comments.
Hitoshi, your portlet is an extension of the Asset Importer or is different. Is it available?
