I tried this and it worked fine for me. It is that compared to the timezone from where you are running the client your server is located in different timezone ?

Check the date settings of Liferay's operating system and application server for any discrepancies.

I think I'm going to pull my hair out on this one... Liferay server has the correct timezone, database server and the VM server that Liferay is running on are correct. 5 hours off! It sure seems like a time zone issue! Only thing in the portal-ext.properties about the calendar is this:

calendar.event.types=Events,Classes,Programs

1. Create a "Time Zone Sensitive" event for 10:45 am. The duration gets set to 5:45 AM – 6:45 AM (Time Zone Sensitive). On the day view it shows up in the correct slot on the calendar @ 10:45.

2. Create a NON-Time Zone Sensitive event for 11:45, The duration get set correct 11:45 AM - 11:45 AM. But on the day view it's listed at 4:45!

Liferay config is user.timezone UTC

Server config...

[liferay@lr1ee bin]$ cat /etc/sysconfig/clock
# The ZONE parameter is only evaluated by system-config-date.
# The timezone of the system is defined by the contents of /etc/localtime.
ZONE="America/Chicago"
UTC=true
ARC=false

Tomcat:
$ cat setenv.sh
JAVA_OPTS="$JAVA_OPTS -Dfile.encoding=UTF8 -Duser.timezone=GMT -Xms2048m -Xmx2048m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m"

Did some more work on this... Looking at the logfiles it doesn't appear that the system-ext.properties is being read, so user.timezone=America/Chicago was getting set. The only work around was to edit the setevn.sh and add -Duser.timezone=America/Chicago.

Anyone seen issues with system-ext.properties not being read? It's in the same location as portal-ext.properties and it loads fine.
